RAW SILKS
WHAT IS SILK
Silk is a natural fiber produced by silk-producing insects, primarily the silkworm. The most well-known type of silk is obtained from the cocoons of the larvae of the mulberry silkworm (Bombyx mori). The process of harvesting silk involves carefully unwinding the threads from the cocoon, a practice known as sericulture.
Silk is highly valued for its smooth texture, sheen, and luxurious feel. It has been used for centuries to create a variety of products, including clothing, bedding, accessories, and more. Due to its unique properties, silk is often considered a premium fabric.
RAW SILK YARN
Silk containing sericin is called raw silk. The gummy substance, affording protection during processing, is usually retained until the yarn or fabric stage and is removed by boiling the silk in soap and water, leaving it soft and lustrous, with weight reduced by as much as 30 percent.
TYPES OF SILK WE HAVE
SILK WASTE KIBISU
Remnants from the production of Kibisu silk or a similar type of silk, it could be repurposed for various applications. Silk waste typically includes leftover fibers, broken threads, and other by-products from the silk manufacturing process. These waste materials can be recycled and transformed into eco-friendly products such as silk blends, textiles, or even utilized in crafting.
SILK COCOONS WASTE
During the process of reeling from the cocoon the silk often breaks; and both in finding a true and reliable thread, and in joining the ends, there is unavoidable waste. Raw silk skeins are often re-reeled; and in this process part has to be discarded: this being known to the trade as gum-waste.
COMBER SILK
Comber silk is the fabric made using the shorter fibres that are leftover from the manufacture of other silk fabrics. Rather than a continuous length of silk, these short fibres are used for noil silk, which has a slightly rough texture.
